Dochula Pass
Dochula Pass, situated on the road from Thimphu to Punakha in Bhutan, is a breathtaking mountain pass that provides visitors with an awe-inspiring panorama of the majestic Himalayan range. The pass is located at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) and is renowned for offering some of the most captivating views of snow-capped peaks, including on clear days the distant peaks of Bhutan’s northern border with Tibet.
One of the distinctive features of Dochula Pass is the presence of 108 chortens, also known as stupas or memorial shrines. These chortens were built to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a conflict with Indian insurgents in 2003. The site serves as a poignant reminder of the country’s history and the sacrifices made to maintain its sovereignty.
The chortens are not only symbolic but also add a spiritual and cultural dimension to the pass. Each of the 108 chortens is adorned with fluttering prayer flags, contributing to the serene and sacred atmosphere of the location. Visitors often take the opportunity to circumambulate the chortens, engaging in a meditative and reflective experience against the backdrop of the stunning Himalayan scenery.
In addition to its cultural significance, Dochula Pass is a popular stop for travelers due to its strategic location on the route between Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, and the former capital, Punakha. Whether bathed in the vibrant colors of blooming rhododendrons in spring or blanketed in snow during winter, Dochula Pass offers a visual spectacle that encapsulates the natural beauty and cultural richness for which Bhutan is celebrated.
