Omba Trek

The Taktshang of East Bhutan stands as a marvel, perched on a cliff within the sacred pilgrim site of Omba Ney. The site holds deep spiritual significance, with the rock face revealing the sacred syllable “OM,” a testament to its divine connection. This location is part of a trilogy of holy places associated with Guru Rimpoche, alongside Aja and Hungrel, where the letters “AH” and “HUM” can be observed.

To reach Taktshang from Nangkhar Gonpa, adventurers embark on a three-hour journey involving a steep descent of 330 meters, followed by a gradual climb of 125 meters. Alternatively, the path from Kheni village offers a three-hour ascent. Along the trek, the landscape unfolds with temples, caves, and various religious sites, each contributing to the spiritual aura of the journey.

One unique ritual involves a short crawl through a narrow cave passage perched on the cliff above the lhakhang. This symbolic act is believed to cleanse individuals of their sins. For the more adventurous, an ascent higher up the cliff through a crack in the rock is also possible, providing an even more elevated perspective.

Nearby, the village of Omba offers a charming setting for exploration and reflection. Visitors can opt for a homestay experience, immersing themselves in the local culture. For those inclined towards camping, the vicinity of Omba provides good camping sites, allowing for a closer communion with nature.

The journey to Taktshang of East Bhutan, embedded in spirituality and surrounded by natural wonders, beckons pilgrims and explorers alike to traverse its trails and experience the profound connection between the earthly and the divine.
